Pizza Oven Laos So it turns out that getting the chimney, and having a chimney that we can use, are two quite different things. On the morning we got the chimney, which arrived with a skirt on the bottom and a mystery bend in … [...] For the past week or so, we have all been patiently waiting for the thick insulation layer to dry. We've lit a couple of fires to help with the process, and the chimney hole seems to be working well with the smoke mostly going out .. [...] Pizza Oven : Archway and Unexpected Developments. It also revealed the flat front we had … [...] Building the first layer of the dome was met with yet more good luck; we were just getting started when 2 kiwi's, Sarah and Mark, rocked on up and said “What are you guys doing, can we help?” So of course we said yes! [...] We started off today by piling up sand to form an opening for the door. So as you know we'd already cut the door out, but there were 2 small bits in the top of the arch that fell out after the first fire so we thought that we'd build up … [...] We started the day with Karen building a sand support for the front archway. It took about an hour to build up the sand in the right shape and have it be just wet enough to hold it's shape and not too wet for water to seep out the … [...] In the morning we were talking about how to do the insulation layer – most of the pizza oven building websites we had visited recommended vermiculite as insulation, of course we can't buy anything remotely like that in Laos … [...] As mentioned yesterday, we planned to light our first fire today to assist with drying out the 1st and 2nd layers of the dome, bring out the cracks so we can fill them in, and test the height of the door.
